Your Brand Deserves Better Than Stock Photos: Why It’s Time to Update Your Brand Imagery
Your website is updated. Your messaging is where it needs to be. Your social media is active.
But the photo on your About page is from 2019…
Or maybe your website is filled with polished stock photos of people who don't actually work at your company, in an office that looks nothing like yours.
Brand photography is one of those things businesses tend to put off, but as brands become more personal, more digital, and more dependent on trust, the images representing your company matter more than ever.
Your customers want to see the real people behind the business and your brand deserves imagery that actually looks like you.
Your Brand Photography Is Part of Your Brand
We talk a lot at CoLabs about the fact that a brand is much bigger than a logo. Your brand is the full experience someone has with your company, and imagery plays an important role in shaping that experience. Think about all the places a potential customer, employee, partner, or investor might encounter photos of your organization:
Your website
LinkedIn
Google business profile
Social media
Sales presentations
Proposals
Press releases
Email marketing
Recruiting materials
Speaking engagements
Award submissions
Advertising campaigns
You get the gist.
One successful brand photography session can create a library of assets that your company uses across dozens of marketing channels. That's why we don't think of professional photography as simply "getting some new headshots."
It's an investment in your marketing toolkit.
Stock Photography Has Its Place. But It Shouldn't Be Your Brand.
We'll say it: stock photography isn't inherently bad. Sometimes it's useful. Sometimes it's necessary. The problem is when stock photography becomes the visual identity of your business.
We've all seen the same images: the perfectly diverse group of coworkers laughing around a laptop, the handshake in the conference room, the suspiciously enthusiastic team pointing at a spreadsheet (or maybe they’re actually pointing at the group Taco Bell order they’re about to place 🤔).
They might technically communicate "business," but they don't communicate your business.
Real photography introduces something stock imagery can't replicate: specificity.
Your people
Your environment
Your personality
Your products
Your customers
Your process
Your community
When someone lands on your website, they should start getting a feel for what it would actually be like to work with your company. Authentic brand photography helps make that happen.

It’s the difference between “Hey, I recognize some of these faces!” and “Wait...is this a real company, or is someone’s 22-year-old nephew running it out of a family member’s basement?” No offense to anyone’s 22-year-old nephew.

Real photos build familiarity and credibility before someone ever picks up the phone, fills out a form, or walks through your door.
Before Your Next Brand Photoshoot, Start With a Strategy
One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is scheduling a photographer before deciding what they actually need photographed.
Before a CoLabs client walks into a brand shoot, we want to know where those images are going.
What pages of the website need photography?
Do we need new leadership headshots?
Are there upcoming social campaigns?
Does the sales team need updated presentation imagery?
Are we trying to attract customers, employees, or both?
Do we need vertical content?
Horizontal hero images?
Environmental photos?
Product photography?
PR-ready executive portraits?
Once we know how the images will be used, we can build a shot list around the marketing strategy. That's when a photoshoot becomes much more than a photoshoot. It becomes content creation.
And Yes, Your Headshots Probably Need Updating
Go take a quick look at your company’s team page. Do all of those photos actually look like they belong to the same company? Or are we working with a mix of professional headshots, cropped wedding photos, selfies, placeholder images, and that one headshot someone has been carrying around since three jobs ago?
It happens.
Teams grow. People come and go. Hairstyles definitely change. Brands evolve. And somehow, before you know it, your team page has become a timeline of every photography style your company has tried over the last decade.
This is one of those small details that makes a bigger difference than you might think. Consistent, professional headshots instantly make your company look more polished and intentional.
And if you’re a growing company, don’t just update everyone’s headshot once and call it a day. Create a repeatable style that can easily be recreated every time someone new joins the team.
That might include consistency around:
Background
Lighting
Cropping
Wardrobe guidance
Posing
Editing style
Instead of reinventing the process every time someone joins the team, you've created a visual system for your brand.
Meet One of Our Favorite Louisville Creative Partners: Kevin Shuck
When our own CoLabs brand needs to get in front of the camera, we call our friend Kevin Shuck of Image Detail Studios.
Kevin has helped us capture the personality behind CoLabs, which is exactly what we want our clients to accomplish with their own brand photography.
And now he has an incredible new commercial photography studio here in Louisville designed to give brands even more room to create.
The studio includes a 24-foot cyclorama wall, professional commercial photography capabilities, and the latest technology for producing polished, creative imagery.
More importantly, it's a space where brands can have some fun.
Because your brand photos don't have to look like school picture day.

A commercial studio gives companies room to think bigger than the traditional corporate headshot: creative portraits, product photography, campaign imagery, team photos, video content, social media assets, and visuals that actually have some personality.
That's the kind of content modern brands need.
